Il Mausoleo di Galla Placidia a Ravenna, risalente alla prima metà del V secolo, è celebre soprattutto per i mosaici che decorano le volte e la cupola. Entrando, si viene avvolti da un cielo notturno blu costellato da stelle dorate che si rimpiccioliscono verso l’alto, culminando in una croce al centro della cupola. Nei pennacchi della cupola sono raffigurati i quattro simboli del Tetramorfo: il leone, l’aquila, l’angelo e il bue, ispirati alle visioni profetiche di Ezechiele e dell’Apocalisse (solo successivamente saranno associati ai quattro evangelisti). La lunetta sopra l’ingresso raffigura il Buon Pastore, Cristo imberbe seduto su una roccia, circondato da pecore in un paesaggio idilliaco, mentre nella lunetta opposta è rappresentato San Lorenzo che si avvicina al martirio con una croce e un libro aperto.

The Mausoleum of Galla Placidia in Ravenna, dating back to the first half of the 5th century, is best known for the mosaics that decorate the vaults and dome. Upon entering, you are surrounded by a blue night sky dotted with golden stars that get smaller as they rise, culminating in a cross at the center of the dome. The pendentives of the dome depict the four symbols of the Tetramorph: the lion, the eagle, the angel and the ox, inspired by the prophetic visions of Ezekiel and the Apocalypse (only later will they be associated with the four evangelists). The lunette above the entrance depicts the Good Shepherd, a beardless Christ sitting on a rock, surrounded by sheep in an idyllic landscape, while the opposite lunette depicts Saint Lawrence approaching martyrdom with a cross and an open book.
